PerkinElmer Optoelectronics Wins Prestigious Queen's Awards in Two Categories

One of only three companies in the United Kingdom to win awards for Innovation and International Trade

Fremont, CA -- April 22, 2003 -- PerkinElmer Optoelectronics, a global technology leader providing market-driven integrated solutions for biomedical and industrial applications, today announced it has been honored with two Queen's Awards for Enterprise 2003, the most prestigious corporate accolade that can be bestowed upon a business in the United Kingdom. With awards for outstanding achievements in both Innovation and International Trade, PerkinElmer is one of only three companies in the United Kingdom to win awards in both categories. More than one thousand companies were considered for this year's awards, with 123 companies ultimately selected across three categories.

The assessment procedure is extremely thorough and competition is fierce for The Awards, which are made by The Queen on the advice of the Prime Minister, assisted by an Advisory Committee that includes representatives of Government, industry and labor. Announced on The Queen's birthday, The Awards are bestowed for five years and will be presented during a ceremony at PerkinElmer's premises in Wokingham, United Kingdom. Later this year, PerkinElmer will be invited to a reception given by The Queen at Buckingham Palace.

The Queen's Award for Innovation 2003 recognizes the achievements of PerkinElmer's FD440/CHROMOS11 products, which are portable laptop PC-based miniaturized devices for testing chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD) of optical fibers, the key parameters that determine how much data can be transmitted over high-speed optical telecommunications networks. Precise characterization of these parameters is essential for optimal network performance. The CHROMOS11 has been used to characterize transoceanic submarine links with lengths in excess of 12,000 kilometers, accurately measuring end-to-end dispersion of repeaterless and line-amplified systems with minimum network disruption.

PerkinElmer has also received The Queen's Award for International Trade 2003 in recognition of its exceptional performance in international sales. With products sold to more than 50 countries, the company's success has been built upon strong in-market representation and distribution, market-dedicated technical sales teams, and total commitment to customer support and training.

"The Queen's Awards are a tribute to the dedicated and creative employees of PerkinElmer Optoelectronics who are committed to the success of our customers and our company by delivering value through best-in-class technology practices," said John Murphy, President, PerkinElmer Optoelectronics.
